The Perfect Hot Cocoa Recipe for January

January is the month where the cold really sets in. What’s better than a delicious cup of hot cocoa during the winter? 

December is when winter officially starts, but it takes a while for something as large as the Earth to cool. January is when the real cold starts and it’s when a mug filled with hot cocoa is your best companion. You can go to the store and buy some cheap hot chocolate or go to Starbucks and get their version of cocoa, sure, but if you want to enjoy real creamy and delicious hot chocolate look no further than this great recipe.

  • 1/3 cup sweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup half-and-half cream
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 3 + 1/2 cups milk
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt


  1. Combine the cocoa, sugar and pinch of salt in a saucepan and blend with the water.
  2. Bring this mixture to an easy boil while you stir. Set to a simmer and stir for about two minutes.
  3. Stir in the 3 + 1/2 cups of milk and heat until it gets very hot, but DO NOT BOIL!
  4. Remove from the heat and add the vanilla.
  5. Pour into four mugs and add the cream to the mugs of cocoa to cool it to a normal drinking temperature.
