What Should You Do If Your Car Breaks Down On The Side Of The Road?

When your car breaks down or you get a flat, you may be stranded in the middle of nowhere! Keeping yourself and your passengers safe should be your first priority. Here are some precautions you can take to ensure you stay safe if you’re ever stuck on the side of the road.

  • Slow down gradually and carefully steer your vehicle off the street, into the breakdown lane or to the far right side of the road.
  • If you cannot get your vehicle out of traffic, exit from the door facing away from traffic and stand a safe distance away from the car.
  • If you do get your car out of traffic, stay inside with your seat belt on and turn off the engine.
  • Activate your hazard lights and turn on the dome light if it is dark outside. If you have safety reflectors and can safely put them out, do so.
  • Call roadside assistance or 911 for help.
  • If another driver offers assistance, roll down your window and let them know that help is on the way, or have them call roadside assistance if you have not been able to.
  • Make minor repairs like fixing a flat tire, if you are sure you can safely complete the task.
  • If you must leave your car to look for help, attach a note to your vehicle with your name, the date, and any details about the situation or your passengers. Walk on the right side of the road and do not try to cross high-speed traffic.
