How To: Improve Your Posture

Do you back a favor, and improve your posture!

Good posture is a very important way to maintain a healthy back, body, and mind. Practicing good posture means that your body will be in alignment with itself, and relieves common pains such as back or neck pain, headaches, and fatigue. Being in good general health and standing tall will also boost your bearing and self-confidence. Here are 4 tips you can use to help you get rid of that slouch and start standing straight with good posture. Improve your posture today!

  1. Avoid slouching. When you walk or sit be sure to avoid slouching. This stretches out your back ligaments and will only make you slouch further. Practicing good posture will tighten those ligaments back to normal.
  1. Use color as a reminder. If you need help remembering to keep your posture (it’s OK, we all need reminders), think of a unique object or color. When you think of that, check your posture.
  1. Take standing breaks. Early humans were nomadic and never stood in one place for very long, meaning that we are natural long-distance walkers and runners. Our bodies were not meant to be sitting around all day—which is exactly what most of us do. Standing and walking breaks do the body good, and standing up straight while taking them is even better.
  1. Tape a giant ‘X’ to your back. This may seem a bit extreme, but taping an X to your back will force your back to remain in proper position, especially if it is sticky tape. Even if you try to slouch you’ll an uncomfortable tugging against your skin that’ll force you right up again.
