If you’ve just received a homeowners insurance quote and find that you don’t understand a word of it then you are probably in the majority. Reading an insurance policy can be a daunting task, especially with the many exclusions, inclusions and deductibles sprinkled throughout. Usually, a standard quote begins with a list of basic coverage’s from A through F with an additional list of options to consider below. The knowledgeable staff at Tri-Star Insurance Professionals Inc. in Frisco, North Dallas and Plano will walk you through a homeowners insurance quote step by step to ensure that you fully understand your options.
Basic Coverages Include:
- Coverage A - The coverage A section of your homeowners insurance policy, also known as Dwelling Coverage, is the replacement cost estimate of the physical structure of the primary dwelling of a home. Since Coverage A only covers structures that are attached to the home by a wall or roof, other buildings such as a guest house, fence or detached garage aren’t included. Determining the right amount of Dwelling Coverage is important because many of the subsequent coverage’s of your homeowners policy are based on a percentage of this figure. You must purchase enough coverage to cover the cost of completely rebuilding your home in the event of a disaster. Bear in mind that rebuilding costs won’t necessarily reflect the market value of your home.
- Coverage B - Coverage B applies to any edifice or other structure that is on your property yet not connected to the home itself including a detached garage, pool house, shed, barn, fence or anything of that nature. The typical coverage limit for other structures is about 10 percent of the Coverage A Dwelling amount.
- Coverage C – Coverage C falls under the personal property category, which basically pertains to any item that you own that is not considered a permanent part of your home’s configuration. Insurance agents usually refer to things such as furniture, clothing, electronics and other valuables as “contents”.
- Coverage D – Coverage D refers to the loss of use of your home due to damage caused by a covered loss and pays for any reasonable expenses incurred from living elsewhere while waiting for repairs.
- Coverage E – In the event of a mishap that occurs on or off your property, you will need to be adequately covered in case of a lawsuit. Coverage E, or personal liability coverage, covers bodily injury or property damage for which you are legally responsible.
- Coverage F – Coverage F pays for the medical payments of others who were injured while on your premises or for the activities of the insured. For example, if your dog runs off and bites someone or a friend is swimming in your pool and falls off the diving board you will be covered.

Recreational vehicles are an exciting way to travel cross-country without dealing with the hassle of flying or the cramped quarters of a car. If you long to experience the open road in your recreational vehicle but are concerned about getting specialized motor home insurance, let Tri-Star Insurance Professionals Inc. in North Dallas, Plano and Frisco find you the perfect package that will fit all your RVing needs.
The amount of coverage you will need on an RV insurance policy depends on several factors and differs by state. Whether or not you want to protect your vehicle, family or both will play an integral role in the type of policy you will get.
RV coverage to protect your vehicle includes:
- Collision coverage
- Towing and Labor
- Gap coverage
- Permanently attached items coverage
RV coverage to protect you and others includes:
- Uninsured and underinsured drivers
- Medical expenses
- Personal valuables coverage
There is a distinction between a standard automobile policy and recreational vehicle insurance even though you can use the auto policy on an RV. Motor home insurance will cover parts of the vehicle such as the awnings, slideouts and stairs that an auto policy will not cover at all. If you have a towable camper you will need a separate policy altogether, although some insurers will combine it with an RV policy. In order to get an accurate quote, furniture, appliances and other personal items should be appraised beforehand.
Even if you think having an extended warranty on a recreational vehicle may be enough coverage, you may want to consider an actual insurance policy. A warranty will cover engine repairs and appliances but not accidents. Tri-Star Insurance will give you all the information you need to make a smart decision.
The cost of a motor home insurance policy will vary depending on the make and model of the RV, the total value of the vehicle and how many additional drivers will need coverage. The driving history of the principal driver is also an important factor. Naturally drivers with a large amount of tickets and accidents on their record will pay more. As different states have various requirements for RV coverage, the primary location of the motor home will affect the cost as well. When everything is taken into consideration, a good policy will offer complete replacement of an RV less than five years of age that is totaled in an accident. For an older model, you should be able to get back the purchase price.
The amount of time you spend in your motor home also is important when choosing the right policy. Fulltimers, people who claim their RV as a primary residence, will need the same type of coverage as any homeowner. This includes property protection for the space in and around the vehicle. At the opposite end of the spectrum is suspension of coverage which is perfect for people who only venture out in their RV a few times a year and only want to pay for coverage when they need it.
When you leave the North Dallas, Plano and Frisco area on your RV adventures, don’t forget that Tri-Star Insurance is waiting back home. Have a great time with your family without worrying about what may happen while you are traversing across U.S. highways. Call 214-387-0600 or toll-free at 1-800-880-4600 today to find out more about motor home insurance and the coverages available.

Car insurance is a necessary yet expensive evil that all automobile owners just can’t go without. Even though sometimes it may be tempting to just cancel your policy and take a ride on the wild side, it is extremely unwise to forgo coverage altogether. However, depending on your vehicle and the state you live in, you may not need to purchase the most comprehensive plan on the market. Tri-Star Insurance Professionals Inc. in North Dallas, Plano and Frisco can help you choose a policy that will fit your needs without draining your wallet.
For most people just getting the bare minimum in insurance requirements is top priority such as liability insurance, which is required by most states. In the event of an accident, if you are judged to be the legally liable party, then you are at risk of being sued for the full cost of damages, which may include property, medical and lost income. Liability insurance protects you up to a certain amount from any negative financial impacts that a lawsuit may impose upon you. Unfortunately, if the total cost of damage exceeds the amount of your liability insurance, you might have to face paying out of pocket expenses. State liability coverage requirements differ greatly and are always specified as the minimum amount. It is up to you whether or not you want to raise the amount for extra protection.
Another form of coverage you may want to consider is collision coverage, which pays for the repair or replacement of your car regardless of who is at fault in an accident. The amount of coverage available depends on the market value of your car and how much it would cost to repair it. This kind of coverage is usually unnecessary for older cars because the coverage is limited to the cash value of your car, which may not be much. In some cases a deductible may even exceed the worth of an older vehicle. However, if you feel you need this kind of coverage and want to keep your premiums low, select a larger deductible that you are sure you can afford to pay out of pocket.
If your car is ever the unfortunate victim of a theft or subjected to the wiles of Mother Nature such as a flood, fire or animal attack, then a comprehensive plan will pay to fix your vehicle less the deductible you have chosen. This kind of coverage is perfect for people with newer cars because they are worth more. Also, if your car is leased the finance company will most likely require you to carry comprehensive coverage.
Whether or not you drive a luxury sedan or an old beater you should always consider purchasing Personal Injury Protection (PIP) even if you live in a state that does not require you to have it. PIP not only covers your own medical expenses in the event on an accident, but also any insured passengers. This kind of coverage is especially important for people that don’t have sufficient health insurance.
Always remember to study up on available insurance policies so that you don’t end up paying for unnecessary coverage. The experts at Tri-Star Insurance are willing to help you pick the perfect policy. Just call 214-387-0600 today!

With all the recent news stories involving vandalism and property damage to many churches or faith-based institutions, you may want to consider the many benefits of purchasing church insurance. Unlike homeowner’s coverage, insurance for churches is special in that it offers property and liability protection including equipment breakdown, indirect loss, and even stained glass windows. Owner Roger Harkins of Tri-Star Insurance Professionals Inc. is adept at working with churches in the North Dallas, Plano and Frisco area to ensure maximum protection.
In many aspects, insurance for churches differs from property insurance in that there is several specialized packages to choose from that serve the specific needs of religious organizations. In the past, any coverage needed was pretty simple, such as protecting the building from fire or weather damage. However, with the invention of high-tech sound, lighting, and office equipment, modern liabilities must be taken into consideration. Slight mishaps can be expensive, but major incidents may jeopardize an organization’s existence. Insurance for churches can provide protection from the uncertainties of day-to-day operation.
Most general insurance policies incorporate some sort of property coverage such as structural damage or theft. As churches face different challenges, property insurance for churches include non-standard items such as:
- Signs
- Fences
- Building and contents
- Pastor’s personal property
- Off-premise property
- Equipment – computers, boilers, electrical equipment
When contemplating church insurance you may also choose to add the following endorsements to your policy for greater asset protection:
- Crime coverage – covers losses in the event of theft, employee dishonesty, and forgery
- Inland Marine – covers property that is moved from one place to another, as well as chattels of great value such as artwork or structural embellishments
The other main type of church insurance to consider comes in the form of liability coverage. A general liability package protects the church against claims of bodily injury that occurred while on the premises or during operations for which the church may be legally responsible such as:
- Daycare facilities
- Camps
- Auto and physical damage
- Personal or advertising offenses such as libel or slander and pastoral counseling
- Worker's compensation
Coverage for medical expenses is sometimes included regardless of fault. A wide variety of other optional liability coverage may include:
- Employment practices
- Sexual misconduct
- Employee benefits such as life, retirement, and disability
- Hired autos such as vans, buses, or cars
There are certain safety measures that can be implemented to minimize the risks of running a religious organization such as:
- Qualified supervision for church activities including any sports or overnight trips
- Established safety standards
- In-depth screening of church personnel
- Disaster preparedness
- Regular building inspection
- Maintain a safe and secure environment
With the unique insurance requirements faced by churches versus other institutions, Tri-Star’s knowledgeable staff can help you determine the right amount of coverage needed to protect your place of worship. To learn more contact Tri-Star Insurance Professionals today at www.tristarinsurancepros.com or call 214-387-0600 or toll-free at 1-800-880-4600 and talk to an agent about the specific needs of your church organization. For the best deals on low cost auto insurance and low cost home insurance, an independent agency is the place to look. Combining coverages with a reputable agency like Tri-Star Insurance can save you money on your overall insurance costs. When you work with Tri-Star Insurance, you can depend on John Coyle and his associates to put together the best insurance package for your needs at a rate that will suit your budget. For low-cost insurance rates and low-cost home insurance rates, call 214-387-0600 or call toll-free at 1-800-880-4600 today and find out how Tri-Star Insurance can help you save money on your insurance needs.
Did you know that your insurance rates are affected by several different factors including your credit rating, past insurance claims and your driving record? It's tough to find low cost auto insurance with a poor driving record, but are you aware that your credit rating works for you or against you when you are shopping around? The same goes for low cost home insurance- for some companies good credit equals lower premiums.
Most auto insurance companies, and now home insurance companies, consider your credit score when they determine your premium - or even whether or not you can get coverage at all. It's a bit controversial, but insurance companies believe that poor credit means you are more likely to file insurance claims. Whether it's fair or not, insurance is all about risk and the theory is that if you are a poor credit risk, you may be a financial risk to the insurance company. The good news is that 2/3 of policyholders have lower premiums because they have good credit scores. It is becoming more common for low cost home insurance premiums to be based, in part, on credit score as well, so you are really much better off to keep your credit score as high as possible.
Your driving record can also affect your ability to get low cost auto insurance. Insurance companies use a point system to help them determine premium rates. The more violations or accidents you have, the higher your rate is going to be. Many companies are moving toward absolving the first at fault accident you have, but this is not the standard, so shop around.
Both auto insurance and home insurance are affected by past claims made, although the purpose of having insurance is for just that. When you have more than one type of insurance through the same company, you may receive a preferred customer discount. Some companies will eliminate this combined discount if you have any sort of claim in a set number of years. Different companies have different criteria they use in determining premium and coverage, so you need to place this question to your agent. Tri-Star Insurance can answer all of your questions regarding how past claims will affect your rate.
Many other factors are taken into consideration when an insurance company determines your coverage and rates. Because Tri-Star Insurance is an independent agency with several different companies, they can provide you with both low cost auto insurance and low cost home insurance. Call 214-387-0600 or toll-free at 1-800-880-4600 today to find out more about how you can start saving money today with Tri-Star Insurance in Plano, Frisco, and North Dallas.

When you are reviewing your insurance needs, you are likely to realize that you need homeowners insurance or renter's insurance, car insurance, boat insurance, if applicable, and health insurance, but have you considered adding an umbrella insurance policy to your insurance portfolio? Many people may not even know what umbrella insurance is, but Tri-Star Insurance wants you to be aware of all of your insurance needs. Roger Harkins and his insurance staff have been meeting the needs of individuals and families in the North Dallas, Frisco and Plano, TX area for years and they can provide you with complete information about umbrella insurance, as well as all of your other insurance needs.
Your homeowners insurance, as well as your car and boat insurance all provide coverage for personal liability in case of an accident that causes damage and/or injuries. Liability insurance is required by law in Texas and for good reason. The expense and cost of damages to property from an accident can rise rapidly and when serious personal injury is involved as well, those costs can shoot out of sight in a big hurry. If damages result in a lawsuit, the dollar amounts can easily escalate into hundreds of thousands, even millions of dollars. Your current liability insurance isn't likely to cover anywhere near those amounts of money.
No one wants to think of ever being liable for an accident that causes damages and injury to another person, but accidents do happen every day. In the age we live in, responsibility and liability for severe damage and injury quite often winds up being decided in a courtroom. If you aren't independently wealthy, a loss in a legal fight can cost you dearly. Those costs can include your home, your vehicle, your life savings and even your future earnings. Even if you win your court case, you can still be found liable for court costs and attorney's fees, which can be substantial. To prevent the potential loss of your financial security, an umbrella insurance policy is becoming a necessary piece of your insurance portfolio.
An umbrella policy picks up where your other insurance leaves off. Your homeowners, auto and boat insurance coverage will only pay up to a predetermined amount of money. If expenses rise above that amount, umbrella insurance covers the additional expense. Umbrella policies typically provide coverage from one to five million dollars, sometimes even more.
Who Needs Umbrella Insurance?
If you own considerable assets, such as a home, a couple of cars, maybe a boat and a bank account, including retirement accounts, you really should consider an umbrella insurance policy. The cost is minimal, considering the potential financial disaster you could find yourself in because of an accidental injury or property damage.
Tri-Star insurance has a knowledgeable, professional staff that knows how to help you determine the types and amount of insurance coverage that will protect you and your assets, including umbrella insurance. Call 214-387-0600 or call toll-free at 1-800-880-4600 today and talk to an agent at Tri-Star Insurance Professionals about an umbrella insurance policy to protect your future.

Did you know that your homeowner’s insurance policy is unlikely to protect your home-based business? Tri-Star Insurance knows. It’s estimated that more than half of home-based business owners are underinsured and the Independent Insurance Agents of America say that nearly 40% of those they surveyed are uninsured primarily because they thought their homeowner’s policy covered their business. Insurance can be expensive, but not having insurance is an unacceptable position for your home-based business. TriStar Insurance understands how to protect your valuable business assets as well as all your insurance needs.
There are two types of insurance that your home business must have: First, liability coverage if you provide services directly to clients or your business will have visitors at your home, including delivery people; and second, protection for your business assets.
Liability coverage protects your business if it is sued for something done (or not done) that causes injury or damage during the performance of your duties or the operation of your business. A General Liability package policy protects your business in the event that a client is injured on your premises or if you or one of your employees injures someone or damages property at another location. Liability insurance may be purchased separately or as part of a small business insurance package.
If you are providing professional services to clients as part of your home business e.g., counseling or tax work, you should continue to maintain Professional Liability Insurance in addition to your General Liability Insurance. Finally, if you have not incorporated your business as a separate entity from yourself, you may want to consider Excess Liability Insurance which has a higher payout than a General Liability Policy.
Property insurance protects the tangible assets of your business from theft or damage. Typically homeowner’s policies provide only limited coverage for business property, such as inventory, office equipment, and computers. Therefore, you will need a separate policy or an insurance rider to cover your business property.
Vehicle insurance typically covers both liability and property coverage. However, you may need to amend your current automobile insurance coverage to reflect a change in mileage and liability that results from your home-based business.
Other insurance considerations:
Workers’ Compensation insurance: If your home-based business has full time or part time helpers who are considered employees, you may need to have workers’ compensation insurance. This insurance covers medical expenses of your employees in the event of work-related accidents. Workers’ compensation coverage also provides benefits for wage loss resulting from temporary or permanent disability caused by a work related injury.
Don’t forget Health Insurance. Although there is no requirement that your home-based business offer its employees health insurance, it is a benefit that everyone appreciates.
Getting the right insurance to protect you and your home-based business is complicated and there are many choices of single and packaged insurance available. The insurance professionals at TriStar Insurance are there to help you make the right decisions to protect your home-based business. TriStar Insurance has offices in Plano, North Dallas, and Frisco, Texas – give them a call. You will breathe easier knowing that TriStar Insurance is there for you.

If you live in Texas, you are certainly familiar with how much damage a hailstorm can do to your car. It only takes one hail stone to crack a windshield or ding your vehicle...and when it’s Texas hail, that windshield will be shattered and those dings are big ol’ dents! When the hail season hits, you need to be prepared for some damage. Repairing hail damage to your vehicles can be expensive and inconvenient. What’s worse, your auto insurance may not cover the repairs. Tri-Star Insurance provides all types of auto insurance coverage in the Metroplex area, including the comprehensive coverage you need to protect yourself from costly repairs caused by hail damage.
Your vehicle can be damaged from many sources other than a collision. Damages from forces of nature like flood, fire, wind and hail are covered by the addition of comprehensive insurance to your total auto coverage. Comprehensive insurance also protects you form losses due to theft, vandalism, falling glass and glass breakage.
Like your liability and collision coverage, comprehensive auto insurance has a deductible amount that you are responsible for before the insurance company pays out any money. Your deductible also affects the amount of your premium. Generally, the higher your deductible, the lower your premium will be. Your insurance agent can help you determine the most appropriate deductible amount for your situation.
When you carry your comprehensive insurance with an experienced insurance agency, filing a claim for hail damage, or any other damage, is easy. All you need to do is pick up the phone and call your agent. Depending on the amount of damage the vehicle has suffered, your insurance company may need an adjustor to come out and look the car over. It’s always a good idea to take photographs of the damage, just as a precautionary measure. The next step is usually getting an estimate for the cost of the repairs from a qualified body shop. Some insurance companies have a list of preferred shops that they like you to use, but you can generally choose the shop yourself and you can also choose not to have your vehicle repaired at all. Either way, you need an estimate from a legitimate repair shop on their company letterhead or invoice form.
- How Important is it to Have Comprehensive Insurance?
If you live in Texas, it’s a simple fact that you are going to have to deal with hailstorms – and probably more than one in a lifetime. Even if you keep all of your vehicles garaged at home and at work, you are still exposed to the weather nearly any other time, and certainly while you are driving. It is not just a good idea to have comprehensive auto insurance in Texas; it just might be the most cost-effective decision about car insurance you will ever make.
The friendly, professional agents at Tri-Star Insurance are happy to help you with your comprehensive auto insurance needs today. Call today at 214-387-0600.

Now that the perfect riding weather has arrived, it’s time to get your motorcycle out on the highway and enjoy the natural rugged landscape of Texas and the surrounding areas. You may be wondering if you should insure your motorcycle and if so, what kind of insurance you should consider. Also, there may be some doubt as to whether or not motorcycle insurance is even required in the state of Texas. You need someone you can trust to help you to make an informed decision, and Tri-Star Insurance in Plano is here to show you your Texas motorcycle insurance options. Enjoy the freedom of the road, knowing that you’re covered!
At Tri-Star Insurance, we believe that insuring your motorcycle is extremely important in that it’s not only the peace of mind you need should anything happen to your bike, but it’s a good investment to protect your assets in the event of a major occurrence.
Texas motorcyclists must have insurance to operate their bikes on public roads and highways. Without it, they not only risk being ticketed, but will be liable for any bodily injury or property damage if an accident occurs when they are at fault.
Let’s take a further look at two popular types of insurance for motorcycles.
COLLISION:
Collision insurance covers damage to your motorcycle in the unfortunate event of an accident. When you purchase collision insurance, your insurance company pays for damages, minus your deductible if you should ever collide with another vehicle or object. Collision insurance usually covers the book value of the motorcycle before the loss occurred.
LIABILITY:
It’s not something we like to discuss, but an even more ominous thought than damaging your bike is incurring or causing damage to someone else, and risking your assets against a lawsuit. Having motorcycle liability insurance is the security you need when it comes to coverage of bodily injury and property damage when you are at fault. As opposed to collision insurance, it doesn't cover you or your motorcycle. An important consideration is whether or not your motorcycle insurance plan will include guest passenger liability, which provides protection in the event that a passenger is injured on the cycle.
- Next, we’ve put together some valuable tips for bikers from motorcycle expert Kenneth Cheek:
- Keep Your Bike Secure: What can you do to keep your bike more secure? If you can garage your bike, alarm it, or secure it somehow while it is parked, you may be able to secure yourself some discounts on your insurance.
- Find a Plan That Is Right For You: Remember, if something happens to your motorcycle, you will only receive the market value so over insuring will not help you get a higher price for your bike.
- Tracking Your Mileage Saves Money: If you only ride your bike once in a while during the summer for pleasure, you should be able to get a better rate if you can keep your mileage low. Also, if you do not carry passengers, this can lower your rate as well.
- Special Motorcycle Training: Taking special DMV or other motorcycle classes can help decrease your rate. Just make sure you keep your certification documents handy in your records.
- Provide Honest Information: Falsifying information is not only unethical, but it may lead to your coverage being dropped or a claim not being processed. Be sure to stay above board when providing information about yourself and your bike!
Remember, don’t just depend on the cyclist or salesperson who sold you the motorcycle to give you the most accurate and up to date information about an insurance plan. Call today for a free quote from Tri-Star Insurance. We are standing on ready to provide friendly service, great quotes, and set you off on the highway ready to ride!

Soon, families all over Texas will be loading up the boat and jet skis and heading out for weekends and vacations designed for sun and fun. In order to relax and relieve your stress, you need to know that your family is safe and protected. That means knowing you have the right kind of boat insurance on all your watercraft before you head off for your family adventure. You need an insurance agency that will work closely with you to plan for the best coverage in your boat insurance policy for your boat, water toys and, even more importantly, your family. In the North Dallas, Plano and Frisco areas, Tri-Star Insurance Professionals, Inc. can be reached at 214-387-0600 for all your boat insurance needs.
John Coyle, of Tri-Star Insurance, has been in the insurance business for nearly 20 years and specializes in serving customers in North Dallas, Plano and Frisco, TX.
Boat Insurance Required By Law
When it comes to insurance for your boat and personal watercraft, the place to start is with Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability (BI/PD.) This coverage is required by law and covers injuries and property damage in the event of an accident. Your BI/PD coverage will pay for medical costs and lost wages in the event of injuries and will pay for any property damage sustained in an accident.
Texas law requires that you carry at least a 20/40/15 boat insurance policy for BI/PD coverage on your boat. The 20/40/15 coverage translates to $20,000 in bodily injury liability coverage for any one person with a total of $40,000 bodily injury liability maximum for any one event and $15,000 property damage liability coverage.
Additional Optional Coverage
In addition to BI/PD insurance, there are several other types of coverage that you should consider for complete protection and coverage.
- Collision coverage- This option will pay for damage to your own boat from a collision with another boat, vehicle or other property. You choose a deductible, which is the amount you pay out of pocket before the insurance coverage begins.
- Comprehensive Boat Coverage- This coverage will pay for damages to your boat that is caused by risks other than an accident. These risks include theft, fire, earthquake, flood and other events that are beyond your control.
- No Fault Coverage- Personal Injury Protection (PIP) – PIP coverage is not required by law, but it can be a very important option for you and your family. PIP pays medical expenses for injuries resulting from a boating accident, regardless of who is at fault.
- Uninsured/Underinsured Boater Coverage- This option will cover your injuries caused by another boater who has no liability coverage or in the case of a hit-and-run accident.
Don’t let the high cost of repairs and medical bills add to your stress should you have an accident or other damage to your boat. Make sure that you have all the boat insurance coverage that you need to cover your damages, should you need it. The best way to make sure that you have the best boat insurance options for your unique situation is to speak to the insurance experts at Tri-Star Insurance. 214-427-7231.
